Our Social Responsibility

Old Mutual Zimbabwe is committed to supporting the development and growth of the Zimbabwean economy through initiatives that foster the development of housing, infrastructure, agriculture and the recovery of businesses.
How we make a difference

Old Mutual continued to focus on creating affordable housing by investing in Nkulumane and Pumula South housing projects. In 2018, Old Mutual developed 596 stands in Pumula South under phase 1 of the projects which were sold out by the first half of the year.

Old Mutual invested in the Eastgate Market complex which is expected to boast a massive 11,823 square metres of prime retail space configured to accommodate a diverse range of SME business models all under one roof. The strategic location of the Eastgate SME in the CBD of Harare will not only bring added convenience to traders and but also enable them to access new markets critical for their growth.

Our key focus areas

Old Mutual is also involved in a number of activities that uplift the livelihoods of many within the Zimbabwean communities. These include:

The Old Mutual Piggy Bank Campaign has been one of the most successful campaigns aimed at charming future markets by teaching them financial planning principles at a tender age.

Each child receives a piggy bank unit after the training so that they can start saving from earnings derived as incentives from their parents for discipline, household chores, doing homework on time or excelling in school.

In 2018 Government declared a state of emergency after cholera broke out in Budiriro and Glen View, killing scores of residents. Old Mutual made a monetary donation, following the Government’s plea for assistance from all stakeholders financially or in-kind towards the fight against cholera.

The Old Mutual Zimbabwe Foundation continues to implement programs that uplift communities. This included hosting six marathons across the country, with more than 7500 athletes and fitness enthusiasts taking part last year.

The Old Mutual Zimbabwe Foundation supports various activities to promote arts and culture, in partnership with National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) and Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA).

Environmental preservation and sustainability are one of the areas that need corporate support and involvement hence Old Mutual’s support of the Friends of the Environment (FOTE) in environmental preservation programmes.

Through our partnership with FOTE in 2018 we have made our own contribution to the development of the Matabeleland region by establishing a tree seedling nursery, located at Siabuwa High School in Binga. We have also established seedling nurseries at Zimunya High School in Manicaland and Thekwane High School in Matabeleland South since the beginning of the programme in 2012.

Old Mutual supports rugby development and this resulted in the 2018 Sables World Cup Qualifier team having 40% of its players drawn from the Old Mutual Programs. The Old Mutual Heath Streak Cricket Academy continued to give children the opportunity to shine through cricket and in 2018 the boys won all their group stage games and met the South African Academy in the final that was played at Old Hararians Sports Club in August.
